Glacier View
On most maps, you won't find Glacier View listed, but it's definitely a "can't miss" location in the Mat-Su Valley.
Glacier View is a small community along the Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway, about two hours north of Anchorage and an hour north of Palmer. While it's not recognized as a town or city, the 450 square-mile region located from approximately Mileposts 100-120 of the Glenn Highway is a hub of activity, thanks to Matanuska Glacier.
The glacier is the focal point of all the activities in the area - thus, the community's name - with several local businesses catering to glacial related tours and adventures. The Matanuska is the largest road-accessible glacier in Alaska, making it an ideal stop on a road trip through the region. Visitors can trek on the glacier themselves or hire a guide, which is the best option for an optimal experience. The glacier is also the headwater for the Matanuska River, so rafting opportunities abound in the region. Other activities include a zip line, ATV tours and luxury camping - "glamping," as we call it in Alaska - with views.
There are several lodges and bed and breakfasts in the area, as well as RV parks and restaurants that serve up traditional Alaskan fare. It's luxury in a wilderness setting, with Alaska experiences around every corner in the road. Getting there is just as amazing, as the Glenn Highway is designated a National Scenic Byway for good reason - spectacular views of the Chugach Mountains, rivers and glaciers dominate the scenery.
Make Glacier View a must-visit on a day trip from Anchorage, or better yet, spend a few days exploring the region.
